A change in the workplace: embracing the change

Nov 12, 2015 11:52:23 AM

Change can be scary, especially when you’re settled in an environment and used to the daily routine. So, one day there’s a shakeup; your manager announces their departure, a new boss arrives or maybe a few new faces enter the fold.

You might start to worry about what will be different; if your work will be affected or if previous work relationships can be replicated with new colleagues. Guess what we pandas think? Embrace the change!

How to deal with a change in your work environment

  • First thing to do is accept the obvious…change happens. In every aspect of your life there will be dramatic changes at some point, and your career is no different. Why not look at the positive effect it will have on the entire workplace, rather than your nerves about a work shakeup. If there are new faces, they are there to make the company better!
  • Communicate with the colleagues you work closest with, and get their point of view on the changes. They will probably have reservations too, but it’s good to share and reassure each other about how you will approach it as a team.
  • Show you are flexible to change. How many people have written that they’re “adaptable to every situation” on their CV? Impress everyone by being proactive in welcoming the new starters, or tackling new policies head on. What skills can you really demonstrate that can impact the change in environment positively?
  • Be positive and welcoming, especially if there are new people joining you. Guess what…they’re nervous too! If the big change is that these new faces are replacing people you worked closely with, try not to feel that they are to ‘blame.’ They were not the decision makers.
  • Keep in touch with those who might have left the workplace, like a manager or close colleague. Always keep your network maintained for the purpose of your work and career.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings, no matter how much they may have changed. Take a few minutes to evaluate what will be different, and that your own career goals haven’t changed at all. Soon, the natural order of your working life will be restored.
