How to start your Performance Marketing career!

Career Path

What are the different roles within performance marketing?

For all those budding performance marketing professionals out there do not worry, we were not going to forget about you! So far cranberry panda has looked at digital marketing, digital/data Analytics and digital design. There are the lucky percentage of university leavers who have decided what they want to do with their careers, and the other percentage who have worked in numerous roles and it has just recently clicked. If the conclusion you have reached is a career in performance marketing, then carry on reading! This blog, just as the others, will look at what is required to kick start your career and what can be expected (even down to salary and title!)

Let’s start with what is involved and most associated with performance marketing. Anyone within the ecommerce performance sector will be DR/ROI focused, along with working primarily on paid social and paid search. There can certainly be more specialist roles like channel centric, for example, Head of Paid Social.

What can I expect from my salary working within performance marketing?

  • Paid Search Executive: £25,000 - £35,000
  • Paid Search Manager: £35,000 - £60,000
  • Paid Social Executive: £25,000 - £40,000
  • Paid Social Manager: £35,000 - £70,000
  • Head of Paid Search: £40,000 - £80,000
  • Head of Paid Social: £40,000 - £70,000
  • Performance Marketing Executive: £25,000 - £40,000
  • Performance Marketing Manager: £30,000 - £60,000
  • Director/Head of Performance Marketing: £60,000 - £110,000

Please remember, (it cannot be said enough), that the above salaries are a guide from our cranberry panda salary survey 2018 (which, if I do say so myself, is worth a read). The size of the company and the budget your employer holds will determine your salary. If you are in a smaller company, you may be given a more senior title because you are taking on more responsibilities beyond your core role. However, a bigger company which can provide more progression will go the more traditional route of title progression.

What skills are hard to come by in good candidates? – What are clients currently lacking that they need?

As a recruitment consultancy, we are always on the look out for a certain spark within each of our candidates we know will make them shine and stand out to our clients. PLUS (secret tip here) we are probably the best pandas to speak to because we know what our clients are looking for!

Time after time our clients are on the look out for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit and, the ability to zoom out and see the impact of their work on a holistic level. They want a professional who, instead of maintaining their level of output, will build and scale their contribution to the company.

Progression is everything – wanting it for yourself and for the brand you represent!

For each of those main avenues what qualifications are needed?

Short and sweet – it is not about the qualifications but the deliverables in previous roles.

(This is why planning your career and ensuring each step is worth-while makes a difference)

For each of the main avenues in Performance Marketing, what technicall skill set is required to get noticed?

Especially within performance marketing, a thorough understanding of each platform is essential (AdWords, FB Ads Manager), and not being too reliant on technology. Clients want to see you have the knowledge of these programmes, not that you rely on them heavily due to a lack of skill or efficiency.

Compared to many of the other specialisms within Ecommerce, performance marketing requires a huge amount of evidence from your previous positions. So, if you are just getting started, what you have done will follow you to the next role so make it count!

Want to know more you say - well I can help with that!

If this has peaked your interest into what else cranberry panda recruits for and what our clients require from our candidates, then look no further. We have covered digital marketing, digital/data analytics and digital design. Click through and have a read! Also, don’t forget to take a peek at our 2018 ecommerce salary survey & insights report.

ANOTHER SNEAKY TIP: Josh has just added some new roles to the website…
