The Marketing Wars: Getting that online marketing role for yourself

Written by Chris Cox | Aug 20, 2015 10:47:08 AM

In ecommerce, the online marketer is a key figure in a great campaign. But you already know that, don’t you? It is a competitive field, as more brands want innovative and original marketing campaigns... and getting that online marketing role for yourself isn't always easy.

After speaking with our Online Marketing panda, we have some tips and tricks to stand out in any online marketing application.

Creative Vs Analytical…or a tag team made in heaven?

Those from a non-marketing background might think the field is strictly a creative affair; bringing together great content, interactive social channels and viral campaigns. While overseeing these tasks to bring together a great marketing strategy is the norm, our online marketing panda Kathryn outlines some key points.

“Being creative is a given, but an analytical mind is imperative. An employer will look for someone who can deliver campaigns, and then analyse the ROI post campaign. Google Analytics, for example, is a highly desired skill. It benefits everyone on the team.” Many job advertisements will request experience in Analytics, but you need to show that your skills extend beyond analysing the monthly figures. So, a commercial and trading outlook and a creative mind is the perfect mix. What creative edge can you show off to support your application?

Prove you’ve made a difference

Kathryn explains the need to prove your worth, either with great ideas or examples of past success stories. “If you are from a social media background for example, where and how have you made a difference? If you have the percentage increases from customer focused campaigns you managed, show them off.”

Thinking about the idea of innovative campaigns grabbing the customers’ attention, we had a look at one campaign that really stood out. Ted Baker used Instagram to post a number of photos with a riddle, requesting people Regram them using a different filter. If the customer picked a certain filter, clues to solve the riddle suddenly appeared. They could then use this to enter Ted Baker competitions.

Using the hashtag #Pinch_me, it garnered interest across Instagram from new and existing customers as they tested the whole filter spectrum Instagram has to offer. Soon enough, Twitter was full of mystified consumers hoping to crack the riddle first. Who would turn down a lovely cash voucher after all? For a campaign that first launched in March, #Pinch_me is still being applied to Ted Baker related tweets. The campaign has remained in the consumer mind, and has new customers keeping their eye on the brand. Clever, right?

Why should I network?

Networking isn’t just about meeting like-minded people. Kathryn says, Using LinkedIn to connect with people, attending meetups and joining the right groups will show your place within the industry.”

Showing a huge interest in the industry, will show that you want to get involved and get ahead. You can list the groups you are a part of to highlight your key interests. The employer might not only know them, but they might be part of the network! Here are a few groups/events to check out:
