Need career advice? You’ve come to the right place! For the final time in 2016, #CareerCounsel opens its doors to provide you with tips and tricks to make your career journey the best it can be.
In part 1 of our #CareerCounsel recap, we looked at the importance of notice periods & probationary periods. As if that wasn’t enough, we also looked at what makes a happy career in part 2. Now that 2017 is a few weeks away, we understand that for many people a new job search might be on the horizon so to wrap up a great 2016 for #CareerCounsel, we’re going to look back at job search tips and how to stand out from the crowd.
What makes a successful job search? Of course getting the role means you have aced the process, but even when it doesn’t go to plan that isn’t to say it was a complete failure. A successful job search is all about the right attitude, knowing what job will be the best for your career and learning new things from each process.
Not getting the job – This isn’t a great feeling, we will admit that. It’s not about the role you’ve lost but what you can take from it into your other recruitment processes. It is your chance to evaluate where you can improve and demonstrate your determination to pick yourself up and carry on.
Choosing the right brand – Depending on your circumstances, the job search might be quite urgent. This doesn’t mean you should apply to just any role and hope something sticks. Consider everything about the role, making sure you are passionate about the company and brand. You want there to be a cultural fit, while excelling because you are working with a product/service you believe in.
Returning to work – Be ready, be enthusiastic and while applying for roles and interviewing have the vision of your first day in a dream role at the forefront!
Career success in a competitive field
It’s always important to realise areas where you can improve. Even the aspects of your career that you excel in, it’s important to stay curious and engaged to be one step ahead of people in your field.
Receiving career feedback is a great place to start. Do not be afraid to request feedback because it is good to know how your management team are viewing your work and how it correlates with your self evaluation. If you are a manager, regular positive feedback is a real motivation while constructive feedback will help your team perform above and beyond.
Identifying the right opportunities and setting realistic goals is another way to set yourself apart. Knowing what you want and what career move will achieve these goals will come across in any job process you might be in…your passion to succeed will be impossible to miss!
Whether you’re looking for a new role right now or perhaps waiting for the right time to begin your job search, you can become a real stand out in the industry to get noticed. Be it networking, public speaking or being active on social media, there are plenty of ways to grow your list of industry contacts and make an impression.
It’s clear from our 2016 Ecommerce Salary Survey that personal branding is important…78% of ecommerce professionals believed it was! Industry conferences, LinkedIn activity and networking were just a few of the most popular forms of personal brand building with our respondents.
