Are you an email marketing superstar? Perhaps you’re ready to take the next step in your career, and want to build on some skills before you become an Email Marketing Manager.

Fear not, as our email marketing panda shares the top 6 skills that she sees in great email marketing managers.

An amazing Email Marketing Manager must be incredible at...

1. Strategy creation

This goes beyond the marketing strategy alone, and your work must be planned alongside the entire company strategy for the year ahead. Showing a thorough understanding of how your work will fit into the context of the plans for the entire year, will see confidence in your ability grow. What personal strategy can you develop that compliments your department AND the entire company?

2. Graphic Design

You need to understand the brand, the tone of the designs and their purpose. Why will great design compliment your email marketing campaigns? This requires a good team ethic, so you are comfortable approaching the design team and discussing what will work and what needs improvement.

3. Copywriting

Falls into the same category as the point above, as you need to understand the brands voice. What tone does the brand want to exhibit in the overall strategy, and are your campaigns fulfilling this perfectly? Both design and copywriting understanding will show you can adapt to each new strategy you will have to work with, meaning you’d be a great candidate to manage the email campaigns.

4. IT Management

Creativity isn’t all you need to make a great email marketing manager. Showing understanding of the technical side of your email strategy, like which platform the emails will display in, is imperative. What time will people be likely to view the email on their mobile? Who is more likely to view this on desktop? Asking these questions, and providing answers, can show a great understanding of responsive email campaigns.

5. ROI measurement

If you are thinking of making the leap to email manager, show your analytical side immediately. Did your strategy secure the best return on investment, or did it fall short? Demonstrate the ability to realise when something didn’t go to plan, and how you will improve on that. Better still if something worked really well, you can plan something that can build on that success. You can work closely with the analytics team for even better insights, showing you consistently work to improve the return on your campaigns.

6. Project Management

Tying all of the above together, you have to be uniform in accordance with the company strategy. Your personal goals should contribute to the company goals, and all your work should be in line with the story the brand wants to tell. It’s your job to introduce people to that story, so you have to have it spot on!
