Black Friday 2022: Trends and predictions!

Nov 24, 2022 10:12:30 AM

It's that time of year again! If you're in eCommerce, Black Friday is one of those calendar dates you just cannot ignore. Do you dread the busy period or does it fill you with excitement?

For us, it's almost like the Christmas season starts early! Who can resist going online to browse all of the deals? We are easily tempted, that's for sure.

As this day has become just a big event, it really does reveal key trends in customer behaviour and customer attraction. It is all systems go - the social media team creates striking visuals for the deals while email marketers think up the most eye-catching subject lines and copy.

Let's not forget the online merchandisers getting the online store up to date and ready! To say it is a busy period is an understatement. So, what does Black Friday 2022 have in store?

2022 Black Friday trends

We love to read all things eCommerce...here's what we discovered this week as the countdown to Black Friday began!

  • Commerce media company Criteo revealed in a study that 74% of consumers were likely to shop online in the lead-up to Black Friday - and the day itself. This is up from 63% in 2021.
  • 82% of respondents to the same survey revealed they would be open to shopping with a new retailer...as long as there were great deals!
  • In a survey by Accenture about Christmas shopping plans, only 39% said they would use Black Friday to get ahead of the curve. However, 70% revealed they would cut spending this year due to the cost of living crisis.
  • Speaking of the crisis, many retailers cannot fully predict how people will spend because of this. However, there is more interest in energy-saving products such as air fryers or electric blankets. These are expected to be big sellers on the day.
  • Will football take over? With England playing the USA on the day (outside of working hours this time), some retailers predict this might impact evening shopping habits.
  • In 2021, 43% of Black Friday sales happened on mobile - this is expected to be higher this year. This means more focus on social campaigns, mobile optimised landing pages and mobile-friendly emails.
