#CareerCounsel: Achieving career happiness in 2016 - Part 2

Dec 22, 2015 10:36:01 AM

Welcome back to our roundup of #CareerCounsel 2015! In the first part, we discussed being comfortable with your workload, or feeling like you could do more, as well as the work life balance.

What else should you consider for career happiness in 2016? Let us share our advice…

New prospects on the horizon?

What is it they say? New Year, new me! Of course you could be settled in what you do, which is fantastic. However, the New Year sometimes brings feelings of new challenges and a need for a change… especially when it comes to advancing in your career.

You might be nervous about taking the plunge, but if you have a clear job search plan it can be smoother than you think.

If you are successful in finding a brand new opportunity, well done! But make sure you do everything you can to tie up loose ends; handover everything you need to and help your soon to be former colleagues as much as you possibly can. Maintaining work relationships will be key for you in 2016.

Is your outlook positive?

Let’s face it, the January blues can affect anyone. But, are you looking forward to the year ahead? Being full of ideas and enthusiasm is a clear indicator that you are ready to get on with what you’re doing with valour.

However, is there something nagging you? If you feel your career goals are not being met, is it time to sit down and set realistic expectations of what you can achieve in a year? Doing this can increase motivation when you see results and means you’re not giving yourself unrealistic goals in a short space of time. Sit down, and prioritise what things you really want to achieve in 2016, and then the rest can follow when you’re ready.

Forget the negatives!

It’s easy to reflect on something you weren’t completely happy with throughout the working year. A speaking event with a few hiccups, or a work error you’re embarrassed by. Reflecting on them is harmless, as long as you’re being constructive about it. Stop kicking yourself, learn from it and apply that in 2016.

And that’s it for 2015! We hope our #CareerCounsel series has helped with any hiccups along the road to career happiness. Don’t fear; we will be back in 2016 with fresh topics to ensure you are maintaining that wonderful career fulfilment.  In the meantime, revisit our 2015 posts right here.
