Have Digital Marketing salaries seen a change in the ecommerce industry over the past 12 months? It’s day two of our ecommerce specialism salary focus, using exclusive insights from our 2018 ecommerce salary survey & insights report.

So how have digital marketeers fared in 2018? Have salaries decreased? Are they hopeful that 2018 will bring a salary increase?

There is only one way to find out! Digital Marketing Salaries by job title – what has changed? Let’s start by looking at digital marketing average salaries by job title – where we can see that there haven’t been huge changes overall…

  • Digital Marketing Assistant/Coordinator: £20,000 - £35,000 (2017: £19,000 - £35,000)
  • Digital Marketing Executive: £25,000 - £35,000 (2017: £20,000 - £35,000)
  • Senior Digital Marketing Executive: £25,000 - £40,000 (2017: £25,000 - £40,000)
  • Digital Marketing Manager: £30,000 - £80,000 (2017: £25,000 - £80,000)
  • Senior Digital Marketing Manager: £50,000 - £90,000 (2017: £50,000 - £90,000)
  • Head of/Director/CDO: £65,000 - £120,000 (2017: £65,000 - £120,000)

Like in 2017, there were not many changes in the Digital Marketing space when we looked at the average salary brackets for each job title. Does this mean there have not been as many salary increases for digital marketing professionals?

68% saw their Digital Marketing salary increase! That’s right – looking at all of our respondents within the Digital Marketing field, 68% saw a salary increase over the past 12 months. 3% saw a decrease in their salary, while 29% said their salaries have stayed the same.

These findings are not dissimilar to 2017 at all – 67% saw an increase while 30% remained the same. So far, it seems there haven't been any major shake ups when it comes to salary for digital marketeers in the ecommerce industry.

Let’s have a quick look at why some respondents saw their salary decrease or stay the same…

Digital Marketing salaries – reasons for decrease ‘I moved to a part time/contract role.’ – This is the most common reason for digital marketing professionals seeing a decrease in their salaries over the last 12 months.

As demand for contract ecommerce jobs grows, applicants are beginning to embrace contract opportunities!

‘I took a career sidestep.’ – Like moving to contract roles, this is another common reason amongst the respondents who saw their salaries decrease. It’s good to know that salary decreases over the last 12 months have not been due to pay cuts or company challenges, but because the respondents themselves chose to make the move in their careers.

‘Brexit!’ - This reason was also given in our Web & Data Analytics salary review!

There was no budget for a pay rise.’ 28% of our digital marketing respondents said that budgetary reasons were behind a lack of pay rise opportunities!

‘I haven’t been with my company long enough.’ With 36% of respondents who didn’t see a pay rise stating this, it is the most common reason why digital marketing professionals in ecommerce did not see a pay rise in the last 12 months.

What changes are expected for Digital Marketing salaries in 2018?

We asked our respondents what changes they expect to see in their salaries this year – so here’s what digital marketing professionals predicted…

As we can see, 57% expect a pay increase in 2018 – a drop from 64% in 2017. More digital marketing respondents expect their salary to stay the same than in 2017, where only 18% expected no change. It’s great to see that a tiny percentage expect a decrease in their salary, which is slightly lower than the 3% who expected this in 2017.

Because so many of our respondents stated that they have not been with their current company long enough, perhaps this also explains why less expect an increase compared to 2017. If they are new in their role, they might be expecting this pay discussion after a year has passed or feel it is too early to raise the subject of a pay rise!
