eCommerce Career Goals: Knowing what candidates strive for

Jun 30, 2022 1:41:27 PM

When hiring eCommerce professionals, do you ever ask what their goals are? The same goes for your existing team - do you know what they are striving for?

In order to supercharge both talent attraction and retention, you need to enrich the careers of the people in your team. Of course, each individual will have their own goals within their role, but people always think about the bigger picture.

If you are not offering the bigger picture, then you might lose out on the best talent. Using our 2022 eCommerce salary survey & insights report, we will reveal what our respondents listed as their goals for the year.

While these are different for everyone, it is interesting to know how the industry is feeling. Furthermore, it can help you lead conversations around employee goals and career happiness.

The top eCommerce career goals

Let's find out what our respondents picked as their main goals for the year ahead...

Career progression/Promotion

68% of respondents said a goal in their eCommerce career was progression. We have said many times that due to stalled career plans throughout lockdown, people returned with a new sense of drive and purpose. They do not want to be in that situation again. So, make sure your employees know where they are heading in the company. Furthermore, make sure your recruitment branding includes plenty of details about growth for potential candidates.

Secure a pay rise

According to our salary survey report, eCommerce salaries are on the rise. 46% of our respondents would like to see their own salary rise too! You should never shy away from conversations around salary with your employees. It's always been a touchy subject, so make sure they know you are approachable in these matters.

Learn new skills

44% of respondents would like to learn new skills in the next 12 months. Once again, as part of progression plans, you should also offer regular training and the chance to learn skills. If this is something you don't have the capacity for internally, there are so many respected courses you can sign up to for your team. Showing prospective employees that they will consistently learn will be very appealing too!

Create a better work-life balance

While this has decreased from 45% in 2021 to 38% this year, it's still an important subject. Work-life balance in eCommerce can be tricky, as it is such a fast-paced industry. While hybrid working has increased, there is still much to be done. It is easy for people working remotely to completely blur the lines between work and home. The best thing to do is show your company cares for employees well being and that you never encourage overtime.
