eCommerce Contract Jobs: Standing out as a freelancer

Feb 16, 2023 7:45:04 AM

In a world of remote and hybrid working, securing eCommerce contract jobs can be quite competitive. However, it is also your chance to stand out in the industry and grow a solid portfolio of work.

We wanted to highlight a few ways to give yourself the edge over fellow eCommerce contractors. The demand for freelance talent is high - it's time you made the most of it!

Honesty - what isn't working for the company?

A potential client will be looking for an outside perspective when hiring a contractor. So, it's best to be completely honest with them and identify their key pain points. There might be an issue they aren't even aware of!

For example, if the social media output isn't getting the engagement and conversion they want, how would you address this? Don't be afraid to tell them what they are doing wrong. Why? Because this will show them that you understand the areas that need growth and that you are the person to help!

Be generous with your ideas

In an initial call for a potential contract, don't shy away from giving your ideas and advice. Many make the mistake of retaining this information, so they're not 'working for free'. However, if clients can't see your approach and creativity, you are doing your skills a disservice.

Ultimately, you want to show that you are excited about helping them reach their goals. They will soon realise you are the person to help them do this! Of course, you don't want to constantly give too many ideas to clients without remuneration. If a client comes to you for constant advice, it's a great opportunity to discuss a retainer relationship.

Niche industries - be the go-to person

Despite massive eCommerce growth, there are still many industries that could be considered niche. As a freelancer, you can become an expert in these areas. That puts you at a great advantage when looking for your next opportunity.

It's also great to highlight any niche skills you have yourself and how these have helped past clients. If you saw great success in one niche company, others will notice. It also means your contract rate will increase significantly.

Your portfolio needs constant attention

Think bold and think smart. What will really attract the clients you want to work with in terms of branding and career highlights? Furthermore, don't forget about the power of SEO so that your portfolio is found by the right people.

Don't forget about testimonials either. A great testimonials page is an invaluable addition to a portfolio, something many forget to include.

Be your own teacher

A great way to approach your search for new clients is by looking at what other freelancers are not doing. It helps you fill a gap that no one else can. It means you will have to constantly teach yourself new tricks and approaches to what you do.

This can then evolve into something greater. Show off what you have learned in unique ways, like video updates on your LinkedIn profile. A simple 'tip of the day' will show clients your knowledge, passion and willingness to share information. Trust us when we say that this will make you an appealing choice for any project support they will need.
