Diversity & Inclusion in eCommerce: Is it improving?

Apr 25, 2024 2:13:13 PM

It's time to discuss diversity & inclusion in the eCommerce industry. Last year, we introduced the topic in our annual eCommerce salary survey questionnaire to understand how eCommerce professionals were feeling about representation and opportunities in the industry.

Once again, we have featured the topic in the 2024 eCommerce salary survey report to see what has changed in the last 12 months. Do people feel the workplace is diverse? Is the organisation making steps towards improving this? Let's find out what people had to say!

Are organisations actively promoting diversity & inclusion?

59% of respondents feel that their company is making an effort to promote diversity and inclusion. It is good to see more than half of our respondents perceive a positive approach, however it could be higher. Companies need to ensure it is a constant focus and not just a 'once in a while' acknowledgement. For example, our 2023 stats indicated that only 10% felt those with disabilities were represented.

As we can see, the scores from both groups are not too dissimilar. We can see that eCommerce leaders rank the efforts slightly higher, perhaps believing they are taking great strides to improve diversity & inclusion. However, it still indicates that company-wide recognition of better D&I policies is necessary across the eCommerce industry.

How do eCommerce professionals rank workforce diversity?

A new question we asked this year was for respondents to rank the workforce diversity. It's great for an organisation to show dedication towards D&I, but is it actually reflected in the business?

From our respondents overall, the average rank was 5.8/10. This suggests that there's considerable room for improvement in this area. While some employees may recognise efforts towards diversity, the relatively low score indicates that many feel there's more that could be done to enhance inclusivity within their teams.ecommerce-workplace-diversity-score

Once again, we looked at both employees and eCommerce leaders for separate feedback. Like before, the scores are very close. We can conclude that across eCommerce companies, diversity needs to be evident not only in different teams but also at the C-Suite level. Right now, these scores suggest that our respondents don't feel this is the case just yet!
