Not feeling challenged in your role?

You might really enjoy the company, the environment and the people with which you work. However, something is threatening the balance a bit. You’ve become used to the daily routine, yet you want to learn more or take on new responsibilities. You're just not feeling challenged in your role.

Sometimes, when a new challenge is sought after, people will consider moving on. But sometimes this isn’t always so easy, or maybe moving on isn’t what you really want to do. Yet something has to change, so want to know our advice? Just speak up in the right way and you’ll then have options to consider.

I don’t feel challenged in my role. What should I do?

As we said, just ask someone who might be able to give you extra duties or give you the chance to try something new. However, you need to approach this is the right way. Here’s what to do…

  • Review your work – Ask for feedback, and make sure everything you are currently doing is being done perfectly. The reason for this is to make sure that you are fully ready to accept more responsibilities, or ready to be given them.
  • Hone your skills – Discover if there is anything you are doing now that can use improvement. Working on that is a great start towards getting those new responsibilities.
  • A two way conversation – Do not come across as demanding new responsibilities…it won’t look appreciative at all. Instead, approach the conversation with your boss as a way to allow them to discuss your positive attributes and what feedback they have. You can then ask if your attributes can be applied to anything they might need help with. You are offering to help them, while hopefully getting the extra tasks you wanted.

Sometimes, it might be the case that there are simply no extra duties or responsibilities to take on. It might be that the skills required for extra duties need more work. Overall, the answer might not always be what you were hoping for. This can happen in any workplace, so you’ll need to consider if a step forward will happen at your company or not.

How can I keep the work routine fresh?

If you have taken extra work on, great! You’ve taken the first step towards a positive work shake up. Here’s what else you can do to maintain a positive career outlook.

  • Don’t concern yourself with issues external to what YOU are doing. What we mean by this is to focus on your work, your team and your targets and shake off any other dramas that won’t directly affect you. A clear head is key in remaining motivated and on task.
  • Embrace changes, as it allows you to adapt your personal working style to slight shifts in the work environment. Don’t fear change, but use it as a catalyst for continuing to shake up your routine and staying motivated.
  • Look forward to the future of your career. You felt like you weren’t being challenged before, so will it happen again? Or are these new responsibilities opening doors to a lovely step upon your career ladder? Consider what is to come, and the lead up to it will be both exciting and challenging as you look to score some major career goals.
