Ecommerce is a challenging yet rewarding world – so what are the big ecommerce team goals in 2018?

For one of our new questions in the 2018 ecommerce salary survey questionnaire, we asked respondents what their top priority was in the year ahead. Is it to grow the ecommerce team? Increasing online revenue? We already know the main ecommerce team challenges, so let’s learn about their goals.

We wanted to know what our respondents believed were the big goals for their ecommerce team this year.

(Note: respondents could select more than one team goal, so totals will not equal 100%)

What are your thoughts on the full breakdown above?

We thought we’d have a quick look at a few of these goals in more detail…

Increasing online revenue

Is it really surprising to see that increasing online revenue is a big goal for ecommerce teams? 68% of our respondents agree that this is a huge priority in 2018. With new competitors appearing all the time, the competition to attract customers is on.

It’s also not surprising to see that those working within ecommerce management, trading and merchandising make up the majority of this 68%.

Improving customer acquisition & retention strategies

In a respectable second place, focussing on customer acquisition & retention is another big goal for 57% of our respondents.

Much like increasing online revenue, this is all about the performance of the ecommerce site and the digital marketing. Furthermore, using insights from web analysts helps the ecommerce team make improvements to make sure those customers keep coming back!

Growing ecommerce team functions

By ecommerce team functions, we are referring to the different ecommerce specialisms within the whole team – web analytics, digital marketing, digital design and many more!

37% have stated that this is a main goal in 2018. Whether it is adding new specialists to the team or investing in tech that supercharges a particular function, it is important to focus on the individual cogs that keep the entire ecommerce team moving.

Recruitment – growing the ecommerce team

While 31% may not imply that recruiting for the ecommerce team is a huge goal, it is still a significant number.

66% of this segment are manager to director level, who would be most involved in the hiring process. So, while more junior members of the team might get involved at the end of a recruitment process, they might not consider it a team goal from their perspective.
