Recruitment jobs: Is working from home effective?

Apr 28, 2022 3:11:39 PM

If you are working in a recruitment job based predominantly from home, you will understand that there is a fine line between working and living, and it can be difficult to establish boundaries, whether that be with your employer, your colleagues or even yourself.

You may be the type of person who can work effectively from home and in the office, however this isn’t always the case for every consultant. Going from working in a busy, collaborative space with your surrounding colleagues to a home office can be a struggle, but it certainly has its perks.

After some research, we have found that there are two types of home-workers:

Segmentors create clear boundaries between work and their personal lives. These people tend to be very structured and strict when it comes to their working hours and ensure that they are focused during the day so that they can relax after hours. Research shows that Segmentors avoid attending personal appointments during work hours, separate their devices, and even go to the effort of separating their wardrobe!

Integrators find it difficult to keep work and personal life separate. These people tend to have a more flexible approach to work, enjoying the ability to perform tasks in the evening rather than sticking to the usual 9-5. Integrators love being able to run errands in the daytime as and when it suits them.

We don’t just offer eCommerce career advice, so here are some of our top tips to creating the perfect work/life balance in your recruitment job:

Establish boundaries between home and the office

Establishing boundaries can look different for everyone; whether it is struggling to manage the expectations of others or simply learning to say no, which can be difficult for people pleasers.

However, creating physical space between work and home life is just as important for your mental health and well-being. If possible, you should create a separate workspace in your home. It could be a home office or even just a desk in your living room – just do not make the mistake of grabbing your laptop and jumping back into bed for the day. Take our advice of keeping your work in your workspace!

Remember to take designated breaks

Statistics show that those who work from home tend to work longer hours than those working from the office. This is usually a result of fewer distractions at home and a quieter environment that improves productivity.

It is important to take your breaks as you would if you were working in the office. Instead of eating at your desk, go for a walk or grab a bite to eat with a friend or family member. You will soon see the benefits that a bit of fresh air will bring!

Get into a routine

Although it is appealing to slink out of bed just before your workday begins, eventually this will not help with productivity. By fitting in a routine into your morning, you are allowing more time for exercise, regular meals, and fresh air.

Stay connected to co-workers

Although working from home is a great solution for the introverts of the world, it can also get extremely lonely if you are not careful. By staying in close contact with your colleagues, you can still feel involved and part of the team.

Getting in touch via Zoom or Microsoft Teams can be extremely beneficial when brainstorming ideas. Texting and emailing on their own can become frustrating if you are trying to explain yourself as you would in person.

If you are struggling to establish these boundaries and have decided to look elsewhere for an eCommerce role that will help you to build a healthy work/life balance, you have come to the right place.
