#AskDesiree: How can I streamline a tricky ecommerce hiring process?

Jul 16, 2018 2:18:07 PM

What happens when an ecommerce hiring process is time sensitive? It can be hard to put together a quick plan of action and still find the best candidate for the job! So how can you streamline a tricky hiring process?

For my monthly dose of #AskDesiree goodness, I was asked this question by a hiring manager who has a sudden vacancy in their team which wasn’t quite expected! It’s always sad when someone moves on to pastures new, but it can be stressful when you have a space to fill during a busy period!

How to save time during an ecommerce hiring process

The first thing to think about during a time sensitive ecommerce hire is working out how to save time! You want to start immediately, I get it, but you will save time if you plan the process first.

Some hiring processes may be more relaxed, so there is some flexibility when it comes to interview dates and candidate reviews. If you need this hire to start as soon as possible, I would suggest setting tight deadlines! Have your shortlist of candidates you want to meet by a certain date and have the interview sessions blocked out in advance.

Of course, you have to offer some flexibility for the successful candidates however don’t be afraid to be transparent about dates you want the interviews to take place. You’ll find most who are really sold on the role will commit to your timeframe!

You must think of your workload too – again, don’t hesitate to make some strategic choices. During your timeline, there will be gaps where you get on with your own role – but some tasks may have to be a priority. This is OK…you can work out what tasks can wait a while or can be passed on to the wider team. Your team is a resource and so is your management. They are there to help during the hiring process, so don't be afraid to ask.

Using an ecommerce recruitment agency

Am I being a tad biased here? Definitely…but hear me out! If there is budget to do so, why wouldn’t you reach out for a few conversations at least?

Finding a specialist recruiter for your hiring needs isn’t always easy – you may be promised the best candidates on the planet but eventually feel like it isn’t going to plan. These conversations are great to have now; not only because you’re in the middle of a hiring storm, but the support will always be there in the future.

The main thing I would look for in this specific situation is a recruitment agency that delivers a hands-on approach to finding you the perfect candidate. You need to be honest in your conversations and state clearly that this is a time sensitive hiring process that wasn’t planned. If they are right for this search, they will map out how they will take some of the pressure off and give you some time back!

Whatever you plan, it’s always good to have a chat with the experts!

Hiring ecommerce contractors

Have you hired ecommerce contractors before? Whether it’s for one week, or three months, contractors can really make a difference during busy periods. Let’s face it…the wonderful world of ecommerce is always busy.

I would recommend this if the ideal candidate has yet to come forward! For example, if you feel you’re two weeks behind, invite a specialist in on a contract basis. Remember to always ask about availability and flexibility – if there was a chance you may have to extend their contract, could they commit?

This won’t only help you either, as your team will be one person down and will most likely have more pressure on them as they cover another workload. We’ve covered the benefits of hiring ecommerce contractors in our Panda Pointers series too!
