Life as an eCommerce employee is constantly changing as we embrace news ways of working and experience changes with the way people shop – both online and in store.

Our 2023 eCommerce Salary Survey gives us insight into how eCommerce employees have coped, and what they are now looking for from their eCom roles. It is also packed full of other interesting topics, just in case you want to get your hands on a free copy!

We have already looked into Life as an eCommerce Employee, so let’s take a closer look inside the world of an eCommerce employee…

Remote, hybrid and office working

Are eCommerce professionals mainly working in the office, on a hybrid basis or fully remote?

The survey results show that only 6% of eCommerce employees are office-based, whilst the majority, about 78%, take advantage of a hybrid work arrangement, and 16% work exclusively from home.

flex working employees

It's encouraging to see how eCommerce firms are providing their teams with more flexible options, which ultimately benefits employees!

Money, money, money

It’s safe to say that the majority of employees are looking to maximise their earnings, which is why we have asked our eCommerce respondents to share the perks they would give up in order to secure a higher salary.

  • 61% said employee discounts
  • 29% said private health care
  • 27% said that they wouldn’t give up their benefits

It would be interesting to compare these results from pre-Covid, given the current shift in priorities towards flexible working options and achieving a healthy work-life balance.

While giving up employee discounts is a predictable result, we were surprised to see that some respondents would forego their private health care. This may be because employees simply haven’t used this in the past, and therefore are yet to benefit from it.

Return to the office

We asked our bosses what they thought would bring their workers back to the office, and it appears that socialising was the number one reason, followed closely by extra holiday allowance and paid travel expenses.

Interestingly, a whopping 33% of employees said they wouldn't return to the office, no matter what. Thanks to recent legislations, employees have got some serious bargaining power when it comes to flexibility.

Job satisfaction

After all these questions, we wanted to ask our eCommerce employees a simple one – how satisfied are you in your role?

The results are in…

job satisfaction - employees

Despite the introduction of various improvements such as flexible working arrangements and enhanced wellbeing benefits, we were anticipating a rise in job satisfaction scores this year. However, the data suggests otherwise.

One possible explanation could be that despite these benefits, employees are experiencing issues such as cultural differences, inadequate training, and other challenges related to transitioning to different working environments, which could be impacting their overall job satisfaction levels.
