#PandaPounds: Digital Marketing Employee Insights in 2018

Jul 12, 2018 2:49:58 PM

Digital marketing employees working in ecommerce have a lot to do! How are they feeling about their careers in 2018? In the second installment of our #PandaPounds special, we will be looking at exclusive insights from digital marketing professionals who work within ecommerce.

Are they happy with their work-life balance? What challenges do they face? We have already seen what ecommerce employees had to say and once we cover all our ecommerce specialisms, we will do a comparison piece. Exciting stuff!

Work-life balance for digital marketing employees

First of all, let’s find out how digital marketing employees feel about their work-life balance in 2018. With plenty of competitors in the ecommerce world, digital marketers always strive to stay ahead of the game with innovative campaigns. Is this taking its toll?

66% of digital marketers are happy with their work-life balance while 21% are not. That leaves 13% who aren’t quite sure of their stance on work-life balance. 49% of our digital marketing respondents believe their manager can do more to encourage better work-life balance, which is a higher number than expected!

Overtime – how much is being done?

While a reasonable number of digital marketing professionals are happy with their work-life balance (it could be higher), let’s see if overtime plays any role in employee satisfaction. How much overtime do those working within digital marketing in ecommerce complete each week?

  • None: 13%
  • A few minutes here and there: 6%
  • Half an hour: 10%
  • An hour: 13%
  • Between 2-3 hours: 29%
  • Between 3-5 hours: 21%
  • Other: 8% (other answers included: ‘It varies’, ‘5 hours or more’ and ’15-25 hours’ a week!)

Looking at these stats, including the ‘other’ answers, 53% of digital marketing employees are completing at least 2 hours of overtime a week.

Digital marketing team challenges

A new question on the 2018 #PandaPounds questionnaire asked our respondents what their team challenges were for 2018. Let’s see what our digital marketing segment had to say! (Note: Respondents were invited to select more than one challenge, so totals will not equal 100%)

  • Customer Acquisition: 47%
  • Staff retention - keeping the team engaged: 43%
  • Customer retention: 42%
  • Company direction (falling behind in digital): 42%
  • Recruitment – hiring the right people: 37%
  • Getting support for the ecommerce function: 26%
  • Global Competition: 25%
  • GDPR: 24%
  • International politics (e.g. Brexit): 15%

For our digital marketing segment, the results are not too different from our overall results (as seen on page 10 of the 2018 ecommerce salary survey & insights report.)

However, company direction (falling behind in digital) is a higher priority challenge for digital marketers – does this mean they worry there isn’t enough investment in their function? Once again, customer acquisition tops the poll, which isn’t surprising for digital marketers!

Digital Marketing – Male vs Female

The gender focus in ecommerce is a big topic in our report this year – and this filters down through our ecommerce specialisms.

Within digital marketing, 56% are female and 43% are male (1% preferred not to say.) So, it seems women dominate the digital marketing segment of our respondents!

When we look at seniority however, 53% of the female digital marketing respondents are manager to head of level while 63% of the male respondents are manager to director level. While women dominate the segment in terms of quantity, it still seems men are more likely to be in the higher seniority levels.
