Our top 5 eCommerce recruitment insights of 2024

Sep 12, 2024 12:12:56 PM

As Q4 approaches, it's a perfect time to reflect on the year. What has changed within eCommerce recruitment and for the people who work in the industry?

We have shared exclusive insights since the launch of our 2024 eCommerce salary survey - now it's time to reveal the top 5 insights from the report!

1) 61% of eCommerce professionals saw their salary increase

61% of professionals in the industry experienced a pay rise in 2024, and the average salary increase of 5.9% indicates that the sector remains lucrative, especially as eCommerce continues to grow. Yet, despite these positive numbers, professionals are clearly dissatisfied with their pay progression, as reflected in the low 4/10 satisfaction score.

eCommerce is a fast-moving industry, and employees may have higher expectations for quicker and more substantial salary bumps, especially as companies scale. Furthermore, even with a 5.9% salary increase, inflation might outpace these raises, leaving employees feeling as though their real income hasn't grown. With the cost of living rising globally, a modest increase might not be enough to maintain financial comfort.

2) Employees ranked their workforce diversity 5.8/10

This year, we introduced a new question asking respondents to rate the diversity of their workforce. While it's commendable for an organisation to demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, the real question is: is that commitment truly reflected within the company?

With eCommerce employees ranking workforce diversity at just 5.8/10, it suggests that while there may be some progress, companies still have a long way to go in fostering truly diverse and inclusive environments. This middling score highlights the need for more tangible actions to improve diversity, rather than just promoting it in principle.

3) 56% shared that their eCommerce team has grown

The fact that 56% of respondents reported growth in their eCommerce teams signals a strong upward trend in the sector, indicating robust business expansion and increasing demand for digital expertise. As we approach 2025, eCommerce recruitment strategies must evolve to keep pace with this growth.

Companies will need to focus on attracting skilled talent by highlighting opportunities for career development and offering competitive compensation packages. Additionally, with the expanding scope of eCommerce roles, tailored recruitment techniques that address specific skills and flexible work preferences will be essential in securing top candidates.

4) 42% of professionals plan to move to a new role in the next 6 months

There are a significant number of respondents who have their eyes on a new role! With a new year comes new goals and a drive for change. There's no doubt that the opportunity to attract new talent is ripe. Current trends point to a competitive job market in the eCommerce sector, with companies actively looking to expand their teams. This makes it crucial for talent acquisition efforts to begin immediately.

In fact, we believe that eCommerce recruitment strategy should always be at the forefront of a business. Make relationships, build a talent pool and strive to retain your staff. You never know when a sudden vacancy will appear on your team.

5) Competitive salaries and remote working remain top non-negotiables

The high percentage of eCommerce professionals prioritising a competitive salary (91%) and remote working (73%) underscores the evolving demands of the industry. It’s clear that to attract and retain top talent, companies must offer not only attractive compensation but also flexible work arrangements. This dual emphasis on financial and lifestyle benefits highlights the need for businesses to adapt their offerings to meet these expectations.
